What the Stats Say...Sheffield United

Four-times FA Cup winners Sheffield United, of League One, host no-times FA Cup winners Oxford, of League Two, this weekend at Bramall Lane for an FA Cup 1st round fixture – the first time the clubs have met in an FA Cup fixture. The yellows make their second trip to Sheffield this season (the first coming on the opening day of the season to Rotherham's temporary home at the Don Valley Stadium) hoping to cause something of a cup upset. Regular contributor Matt Peck brings us the lowdown on the clubs' respective FA Cup records.

FA Cup Runs
Sheffield United have won the FA Cup 4 times, the last coming in 1925. They haven’t achieved better than the semi finals in post war FA Cup History. The most recent semi final appearance was in 2002/2003, when they were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal.

Oxford have got no further than the 6th round, achieving this feat in the 1963/64 season as the first Fourth Division club to reach that stage. They were beaten 1-2 by Preston North End to end that run. Indeed, Oxford haven’t advanced beyond the 3rd round since 1998/99.

OTHER STATS

The FA Cup provides some fantastic history, yet Oxford and Sheffield have never met in this cup competition. Indeed, they have only met once in any cup completion. Back in the 1986 League Cup where Oxford won 3-1 on their way to the trophy.

The last time Sheffield United and Oxford United played each other was in the old Division One, 1998/99 season. Oxford beat Sheffield 2-1.
