Oxford United 1-2 Portsmouth

Oxford's JPT campaign is over for another year as they fell at the first hurdle at home to Portsmouth. The yellows dominated for large portions of the net but were unable to put the ball in the net and were undone by second-half goals from Patrick Agyemang and John Marquis. It extends the home losing streak to three matches ahead of the visit of Northampton on Saturday, but on a positive note youngsters Josh Ruffels and Callum O'Dowda each got 90 minutes and Scott Davies also impressed.

MATCH REPORT: Oxford United 3-3 Southend United

Just days after our FA Cup disappointment against Sheffield United, Oxford were knocked out of a second cup competition, bowing out of the JPT on penalties at the hands of Southend. While it is less of a shame to be out of the much maligned Trophy the manner of the defeat did hurt, coming cruelly from the penalty spot. It also, of course, means the end of our cup adventures for this season and allows us to roll out the 'concentrate on the league' cliches.

MATCH REPORT: Oxford United 1-0 Swindon Town

A large vocal crowd and a huge atmosphere. Late drama triggering pandemonium in the stands. Isn't that just the norm for the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy?

The JPT may be a pointless competition, but this was as intense as any derby match that has preceded it. It was a tense match of few chances which seemed to be heading for penalties before Alfie Potter's late strike ensured bragging rights stayed in Oxford.

The season may be less than a month old, but already the drama has begun. We're in the midst of a turbulent week, as United's League Two campaign hit a bump with defeat at York this weekend, followed by troubling rumours linking Chris Wilder with the vacant managerial post at Coventry City. I'm sure we'll have more to say on that as events unfold, but speculation over Wilder's future appears to have overshadowed the latest instalment of the A420 Derby.

What the Stats Say...Southend (JPT)

Oxford face Southend again, as the Shrimpers visit for a Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie just days after their league clash which saw Southend take a two-point lead at the top of the table. Southend are now 9 points ahead of the Us in the league, but after being thoroughly outplayed on Saturday they will arrive at the Kassam with a battle on their hands. They do, however, have a far superior record in this competition, though this will be the first meeting between the two sides in the Football League Trophy, due in no small part to Oxford's abysmal record in it, as Matt Peck reveals.
